Always Be Prepared
You never know when you might need to defend yourself or your family from the bad guys. So even when doing school work, be prepared!

I love it!! That made me grin. Boys are great, aren't they? :)
By the way, what do you do, if anything, during the summer to keep stuff fresh in your boys' minds? I have started doing a "Boz" workbook with Brandon (he's almost 5!) and he loves it. It has a short lesson with letter sounds, numbers, and other activites. I learned after taking a break at Christmastime that when he doesn't do his letters for awhile, his recall slows down! Now I totally get why we had summer reading programs as kids!
I just laughed and laughed! Aaron is SO cute!!
Sara - I didn't do anything over the past summers, but plan to this summer for the exact reason you said.
Both of my older two didn't really start reading until 1st grade, but may have sooner if I'd worked with them over the summer. Right now, my youngest is not reading yet, and still forgetting some of the letters & sounds. So I plan to continue (2 - 3 days a week) with the "Explode the Code" phonics series that we started this year. The first Pre-Reading books in the series are Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code.
I think I'll also get him an early handwriting book, which should help him remember all the letters and what they look like.
Mom - I cracked up too when I saw Aaron sitting there with his weapons!

Hey Chris ~ yes, I've heard of Explode the Code -- I looked for that series last fall, but couldn't get it through Barnes & Noble (I wanted to look at it before I bought it). I'll bet it's really good.
I appreciate you sharing that your older boys were in 1st grade before they were reading well. Sometimes it feels like people really rush kids into reading and writing so young these days. I've heard from several experts to *not* push it, but watch for when the individual child is ready -- less frustration for child and parent!
This fall we're going to start a Kindergarten curriculum by Heart of Dakota Publishing. But since Brandon will only be turning 5 in July, I plan to kind of keep an eye on his progress as we go -- I don't want to overwhelm him, and if we need to wait a bit, then we'll wait. Plenty of time to learn reading, writing, and 'rithmatic! :)
